An Art History Nerd's Newfound Heaven

I know I know...more of that art stuff. But you've got to understand that this blog is not only to inform you of my adventures here in Italia, but also serves as a picture journal for myself. So more art stuff there will be! Enjoy :)

Day 4 (August 31) we visited the faraway and separate country of Vatican City. First stop: St. Peter's Basilica-the most famous basilica in all of Christendom. And by the looks of this place...I believe it! It is such a beautiful and ornate building. Not to mention its size!

The Basilica is also home to one of my most favorite pieces of art, Michelangelo's Pieta.

Then we hit up the Vatican Museums and saw these treasures:

Laocoon

Raphael

Raphael's School of Athens
Ok I limited myself this time and only picked my favorites to post. But seriously, the Vatican Museums are loaded with famous original works of art. I may or not have spent a few hours walking their galleries... don't judge :)

We stopped at a little bar for a panino for lunch.

That is one of the greatest things about Italy, even the hole-in-the-wall bars off the street have the most delicious food! And its all so simple, pretty much just cheese, basil, and tomatoes somehow incorporated into every meal but it is all so fresh and so DELICIOUS!

Later that night I also tried my first cannoli from one of the best gelaterias in town: Giolitti

A canolo is a yummy pastry tube filled with a sweat cream made from either ricotta or mascarpone cheese and topped with powder sugar. Yummy!!
We finished off the night with a walk to the Colosseum to see it lit up at night. It was quite the sight! Rome by night is even more majestic than during the day.

Buona Sera!
